Ferrari vs. Lamborghini - which is a better car for you?

Even people who do not consider themselves to be "car people" are familiar with the names Ferrari and Lamborghini. These two marques represent two of the most exotic, high-performance vehicles on the road today. If you are at a point in life where owning one of these exquisite Italian sports cars is a consideration, then you may be wondering which one is the best for you. Let's take a closer look at the passionate issue of "Ferrari vs. Lamborghini."

Is there a story behind the Ferrari vs Lamborghini rivalry?

It would be difficult to get the flavor of a Ferrari vs Lamborghini comparison without a little history of the rivalry between the two marques. Let's start with Ferruccio Lamborghini.

Born in 1913, Ferruccio Lamborghini was an unusually bright, mechanically-inclined young man who constantly tickered with all sorts of mechanical things. In 1948, he started Lamborghini Trattori which quickly became an important manufacturer of tractors and agricultural equipment during Italy's post-WWII economic boom.

As the story goes, Lamborghini one day discovered that some of the parts that he used to build his farm tractors were the same commercial parts that Enzo Ferrari used to build his Ferraris. This wouldn't have amounted to much except Lamborghini mentioned this to Enzo Ferrari face-to-face in a not so diplomatic way. "You build your beautiful cars with my tractor parts," he said, and Ferrari responded, "You are a tractor driver, you are a farmer. You shouldn't disparage my cars because they're the best cars in the world." Apparently this infuriated Lamborghini, who stated "Yes, I am a farmer but I'll make a sports car to show you how a sports car should be made."

Thus the rivalry began and Lamborghini delivered his first 350GTs to customers in 1964.

Today, do Ferrari and Lamborghini make different types of cars?

Both Ferrari and Lamborghini produce primarily sports cars today but there is a difference between the two. Ferrari is known primarily for Grand Tourer (GT) models which are high-performance cars that tend to offer more comfort and are slightly larger than 2 seater sports cars. This is because GT cars were originally conceived and designed for long distance road travel, not just winning at the race track. Lamborghini does not offer any GT models, and as of 2020 only offers three 2 seater sports car models and a specialty car, the Lamborghini Urus, a high-performance SUV.

How do Ferrari and Lamborghini Perform?

In general, Lamborghini tends to produce higher horsepower vehicles than Ferrari. As of 2020, the fastest street-legal Ferrari is the 488 Pista with a 711 HP V8, a maximum speed just over 210 mph, and the ability to accelerate to 60 mph in 2.85 seconds. However, the 2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ surpasses that with 759 HP V12, a maximum speed at 217 mph, with a similar acceleration time.

How about cost differences between Ferraris and Lamborghinis?

You know the old saying, "If you have to ask what it costs, you probably can't afford it." Indeed, there is some truth to this. Few walk into a Ferrari or Lamborghini dealership ready to wheel and deal on price, and some say the majority of buyers never even ask about the cost until they're ready to sign the final check. That being said, the least expensive Ferrari and the least expensive Lamborghini are both approximately $200,000 (USD) and models from both companies quickly go up from there.

So, who should purchase a Ferrari or Lamborghini?

Ferrari - If you want a comfortable supercar, Ferrari's GT models are a good place to look. Ferrari's 7 year maintenance plan is another factor that may sway a potential buyer - you can simply take your car in for a yearly check-up. One important thing to consider with Ferraris is the transmission. Ferrari models only offer automatic clutch transmissions. There isn't a single stick-shift Ferrari still available on the market today, as the last ones (a few stick-shift Californias and 599s) were made years ago.

Lamborghini - If you want one of the fastest street-legal cars in the world, and want to turn a few heads, a Lamborghini is the car for you. The current lineup consists of the low-slung and decidedly exotic Aventador and Huracan sports cars, and the hot-blooded Urus sport-utility vehicle. As is Lamborghini's custom, all of its vehicles are named for famed fighting bulls because its founder (Ferruccio Lamborghini) was a lover of bulls and born under the sign of Taurus. Lamborghini offers a similar semi-automatic transmission to Ferrari, but if you prefer to drive a real manual with a clutch, you should also go for a Lamborghini.
