For two years now, the Lamborghini Huracán Performante has sat up high on the pedestal of Huracán hierarchy. The Performante is a track-oriented variant of the original Huracán and was unveiled to thunderous acclaim at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Today, however, a new model has ascended to the throne and it’s the Huracán Super Trofeo Omologata (STO). The Huracán STO was designed to deliver all the feel and technology of a genuine race car in a road-legal model.
How does it perform on the track?
On a racetrack, the STO is the quickest streetable Huracán by a considerable margin. Lamborghini says the new car can lap the Daytona International Speedway road course in 1:48.9-nearly three seconds quicker than the Performante.
One of the reasons for this is a decrease in weight over the Performante. Besides ditching the front half of the drivetrain, other weight-saving measures include magnesium alloy wheels, a titanium roll cage, and a carbon-fiber clamshell front end. Inside, the STO loses carpets, gains carbon-bodied sports seats, and the windshield is 20 percent lighter. The result is that the STO weighs 95 pounds less than the Performante.
What does the Huracán STO have for an engine?
The STO has a DOHC 40-valve V-10 with aluminum block and heads, and direct fuel injection. It displaces 318 cu. in. and pumps out 631 hp. Enthusiasts will note that the peak horsepower is similar to the Performante, but the STO gets a more aggressive throttle map and a sharpened top-end soundtrack. As a result, the accelerator response is almost instantaneous and peak torque arrives at a screaming 6500 rpm. The engine is mated to the rest of the drivetrain by a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Are there any suspension upgrades on the Huracán STO?
The STO’s suspension is fortified for the racetrack with new bushings and anti-roll bars, as well as recalibrated MagneRide active dampers. Dynamic settings are still regulated by the ANIMA controller, but the modes have been renamed: STO is intended for road use, Trofeo for dry track, and Pioggia for wet surfaces.
One trait the STO shares with other Huracáns was its low-effort steering. It uses a fixed-ratio steering rack instead of the variable-ratio setup offered with other versions. Like the Huracán Evo, the STO also gets a rear-steering system, capable of adding up to three degrees of lock, which helps the car change direction under race conditions.
What’s the Huracán STO interior like?
The interior offers lightweight, high-quality materials throughout-most notably carbon fiber. Featured in the door panels, interior details, seats and floor mats, this innovative and distinctive material offers a super-sports look. While recalling the Huracán EVO, the interior design of the new Huracán STO focuses overall weight reduction.
Since it’s a racecar, it must have special brakes?
Yes, the STO has been treated to upgraded brakes. Lamborghini has fitting it with CCM-R discs that offer 25 percent more stopping power than regular carbon-ceramics and a 400-percent improvement in thermal conductivity. There is also a new dashboard display to display rotor and brake fluid temperatures.
