The Legendary V12 Lamborghini Espada 400 GT

Underneath the hood of the Espada, you could find a sixty-degree V12 engine which was introduced with a displacement of 3.5 liters. In 1964, the V12’s displacement was increased to 4 liters. It was Lamborghini’s most impressive example of engine development technologies, delivering 325 horsepower when Lamborghini fitted it in the Espada. The Espada Series II, introduced in 1970, increased the horsepower to 350! The Espada was the fastest four-seat car in the world upon its release, offering a top speed of 152 MPH and a 0-60 time of just 5.9 seconds! The original Espada was equipped with a five-speed manual transmission, while a three-speed automatic transmission was made available in 1974.

Ferruccio Lamborghini made his objective very clear from the beginning of his automobile manufacturing career. He wanted to make the best grand tourer on the market: a sports car with comfort and luxury to go along with its exciting performance. In March of 1968, the Espada 400 GT was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show, embodying Ferruccio’s luxurious sports car idea and continued for over a decade. Its body followed a fastback coupe design with an aggressive stance and two headlights on either side of the grille. The Espada’s interior was designed to seat four adults comfortably and offered more space for both luggage and passengers than the 400 GT 2+2, its predecessor. In addition to its spaciousness, the Espada offered a luxurious cabin with refined materials and generous amounts of leather. Additionally, air conditioning was an available option. In 1969, power steering became an available option and became standard equipment in 1972.

In total, 1226 Lamborghini Espada’s were manufactured across the three series. This included 176 of the Espada 400 GT Series I between 1968 and 1969, 578 of the Espada 400 GTE Series II between 1970 and 1972, and 472 of the Espada 400 GTS Series III between 1972 and 1978. In 1971, the Espada VIP debuted and only 12 examples were produced. The first models of this special edition model came in a unique orange color and displayed black and orange leather upholstery. Later models came with other color combinations. Inside the Espada VIP, you could find a mini-bar and a refrigerator in the rear side panels and a television on top of the transmission tunnel for rear-seat passenger entertainment.
